Air Vice Marshal Sidney Webster CBE AFC* (deceased)

Flt Lt Sidney Webster joined the Aircraft and Armament Experimental Establishment at Martlesham Heath as a test pilot on his return from India in 1923. In 1927 he was appointed to the High Speed Flight at the Marine and Aircraft Establishment at Felixstowe. In September 1927, in Venice, he flew the Supermarine S5 at an average speed of 281.65mph to win the Schneider Trophy for Great Britain. For his work with the High Speed Flight he was awarded a bar to his Air Force Cross. This was the first of three consecutive British successes in Schneider Trophy races which won the trophy outright for Great Britain. Flt Lt Webster returned to his duties as a test pilot and eventually retired from the service on 12th August 1950 as Air Vice Marshal. He died on 5th April 1984.
