The Schneider Trophy is one of the best known air races in history, but excluding a modern revival, there were only 12 of the events held between 1913 and 1931 when Britain won the trophy outright. This painting shows the first of two American winners of the prestigeous competition - Lt. David Rittenhouse of the US Navy - taking off in his Curtiss CR-3 Racer from the Solent on 27th September 1923. With an average speed of 177mph, he was the first competitor to exceed 150mph. When the competition was next held just two years later, the winning average speed was now more than 230mph and the winner was the only other American to win the trophy - one James Doolittle, who went on to become a famous wartime General. A high speed test pilot in the Royal Air Force, he was the pilot who flew the Supermarine S5 to win the Schneider Trophy for Great Britain in 1927, the first of three victories to win the trophy outright for the country. He retired from the RAF as Air Vice Marshal in 1950. He died in 1984. Please note that this particular signature has been written in pen - not in pencil like most of our signatures. Name Info Air Vice Marshal Sidney Webster CBE AFC* (deceased) *Signature Value : £75 (matted) Flt Lt Sidney Webster joined the Aircraft and Armament Experimental Establishment at Martlesham Heath as a test pilot on his return from India in 1923. In 1927 he was appointed to the High Speed Flight at the Marine and Aircraft Establishment at Felixstowe. In September 1927, in Venice, he flew the Supermarine S5 at an average speed of 281.65mph to win the Schneider Trophy for Great Britain. For his work with the High Speed Flight he was awarded a bar to his Air Force Cross. This was the first of three consecutive British successes in Schneider Trophy races which won the trophy outright for Great Britain. Flt Lt Webster returned to his duties as a test pilot and eventually retired from the service on 12th August 1950 as Air Vice Marshal. He died on 5th April 1984.
