Wing Commander Ivor Cosby (deceased)

Ivor Henry Cosby was born in London in 1919 and learned to fly before joining the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1938. Commissioned into the RAF in 1939, he initially served with No. 13 Squadron during the Battle of France before volunteering for Fighter Command after the evacuation from France. Flying with several Spitfire squadrons during the Battle of Britain, he later transferred to night-fighter operations with No. 141 Squadron, achieving success against German aircraft. After a period as an instructor and Chief Gunnery Officer, Cosby returned to operational flying with No. 264 Squadron, where a series of night victories earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1944. Following the war he commanded an Air Disarmament Wing in Germany and later flew Mosquitos with No. 98 Squadron. He remained in the RAF for a long post-war career, holding a variety of command and staff appointments, including command of No. 151 Squadron and RAF Aldergrove, before retiring in 1974 as a Wing Commander. He died in September 1994.
