Frederick Rosier
| Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier (deceased) Rosier joined the RAF on a short service commission in 1935 and, after completing his flying training, joined No. 43 Squadron before becoming a flight commander with the newly formed No. 229 Squadron at the outbreak of the Second World War. During the Battle of France he claimed enemy aircraft before being shot down and badly burned, returning to command No. 229 Squadron during the Battle of Britain after recovering from his injuries. He later led the squadron to the Middle East, where it took part in operations in the Western Desert, before commanding No. 262 Wing and earning the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his outstanding leadership and gallantry. Following further wartime staff and command appointments, Rosier remained in the RAF after the war, holding a succession of senior operational and strategic posts, including Air Officer Commanding Air Forces Middle East, Commander-in-Chief of Fighter Command, and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces Central Europe. Promoted to Air Chief Marshal in 1970, he was widely recognised for his distinguished service, receiving honours including the OBE, CBE, CB, KCB and GCB. After retiring in 1973, he served in the aerospace industry before his death on the 10th of September 1998. |
