Major Richard Partridge DSO (deceased)

Born 10th October 1910, educated at Eastbourne College. Joined the Royal Marines as a Probationary Second Lieutenant on 2nd January 1929. Volunteered for flying duties in 1933 and qualified as a fighter pilot to serve in the aircraft carriers Courageous, Hermes and Glorious. He took command of No.804 Sqn on its formation in November 1939 and flew convoy escort duties and provided fighter cover for Scapa Flow. He then commanded No.800 Sqn aboard HMS Ark Royal in April 1940 and flew fighter patrols over Allied troops in Namsos and Aandaisnes. On April 9th he led his squadron from Haiston in the Orkneys to sink the Konigsberg in Bergen harbour, an action for which he received the Distinguished Service Order. On April 27th he had to force land his Blackburn Skua on a frozen fjord after shooting down a Heinkel 111 and then, together with his observer, completed an epic ski trek through the mountains to rejoin his ship. On June 13th 1940 he was shot down with seven other Skuas in the badly- advised attack on the German battleship Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in Trondheim harbour. He spent the next five years asa prisoner of war in Germany. He was twice mentioned in despatches for oeration in Norway and a third time in 1946 for his conduct as a prisoner of war.

In 1946 he returned to flying as Commander (Flying) at HMS Daedalus. Later he attended the Empire Test Pilots School where he obtained a Distinguished Pass. He retired from the Royal Marines at his own request in January 1951 to become a farmer in Sussex. He died in June 1990.
