Cyril Hampshire
| Flying Officer Cyril Hampshire DFM (deceased) Originally joining the Royal Air Force as a metal rigger, by the time World War Two began he had qualified as a pilot and joined No.85 Sqn flying Hurricanes. He flew wtih the squadron in the Battle of France, claiming two victories plus one damaged and one probable victory, returning to the UK as Germany overran France. In the Battle of Britain he claimed another victory with No.85 Sqn before joining No.111 Sqn, then No.249 Sqn and then No.96 Sqn, serving until February 1942. At one point he flew the Defiant as a night-fighter. In February 1943 he was seriously injured in a flying accident when the Oxford he was piloting crashed on take off - two other crew were killed in the accident. Due to his injuries he never flew again and left the RAF in 1946. He died on 29th April 2004. |
