Laurence Sinclair Died : 14 / 5 / 2002

Air Vice Marshal Sir Laurence Sinclair GC KCB CBE DSO and Bar (deceased) He joined the RAF prior to World War Two and by 1941 was in command of No.110 Sqn flying Blenheims from RAF Wattisham, where he was awarded his George Cross. The citation reads : During a night in September, 1940, an aircraft burst into flames while taking off. Wing Commander Sinclair immediately went to render assistance, but two 250lb bombs exploded before he reached it. Undeterred, and knowing that two more bombs were in the aircraft, he pressed on and dashing into the fire he succeeded in dragging the air gunner to a safe distance. In this act this officer displayed the most complete disregard for his own safety. Unfortunately the rescued air gunner has since died of his injuries. He continued his service during the war, leading 323 Wing before taking various senior staff roles until retirement in 1960. After this, he became the first Controller of Britain's Air Traffic Control Service. He died on 14th May 2002.
