Clipped Signature - Harry Burton

Born in May 1919 and educated at Glasgow High School, Harry Burton joined the Royal Air Force in 1937 and during World War II served in Europe, India and the Pacific. On 5 September 1940 while flying a Wellington on Operations he was shot down and taken prisoner. In 1941 he became the first British officer to escape from Germany and was awarded the DSO. He was promoted to Group Captain in 1958 and commanded Royal Air Force Scampton. In 1971 he was promoted to Air Marshal, awarded a Knighthood and served his last appointment as AOC-in-C Air Support Command from which he retired in 1972. He would pass away on the 29th of November 1994.
