On the night of 12th/ 13th August 1941 No.9 Squadron, in their Wellington Bombers, are once again taking the war into the heartland of Nazi Germany, WS-G Skipper Flt/Lt Kenneth Ball fights to keep her straight and level through the intense flack that surrounds the target, while his front gunner Sgt Cyril Chandler tries in vain to take on the menace of the search lights that seek their Wellington. Both aircraft coded WS-G and WS-Z would be listed as Failed to Return from this mission. This Print was split into dfferent editions signed by different groups of crew, this edition is not signed by the artist.

Flight Lieutenant Dennis Mason DFM

Dennis joined the RAF in June 1940. After training as a Wop/AG at Yatesbury and Lossiemouth Dennis was posted to 149 Squadron at Mildenhall in June 1941. Dennis flew on the raid depicted in Wellington Attack in 149's F for Freddie. The Wellington bomber that had found fame in the film Target for Tonight. On completion of his first tour Dennis had a brief spell instructing before returning to front line duty for his second tour with IX Squadron as they converted to Avro Manchesters and Lancasters. It was at this time Dennis changed trades to become a bomb aimer. Promoted in quick succession to Flight Lieutenant Dennis would also be awarded the DFM from his exploits at 149 Squadron. In retirement Dennis would put pen to paper under the pseudonym Mike Dee entitled The Third Son as a Night Bomber.

Flying Officer Harry Kartz (deceased)

Harry joined the RAF in1940 having previously learned to fly in the Civil Air Guard during the pre war years. Upon joining the RAF he hoped to continue pilot training. However, much to his disappointment he was remustered as an airgunner passing out at Yatesbury. Posted to IX Squadron in May 1941 he immediately started operations as a front gunner in Flight Lieutenant Edwards crew on aircraft WS-N. The raid depicted in Wellington Attack would in fact be Harry's last operation with the Squadron. Having once more applied for pilot training he would be knocked back again. The RAF having decided Harry should be commissioned and re trained to run the filter room at RAF Bawdsey. After the war Harry an avid fan of horse racing won a bet that would allow him to purchase a small engineering business and following a successful career in that he would become chairmen of Aston Villa FC at the time of their League and European Cup success in the early 80s. He would die on the 12th of March, 2016.

As a Mid-Upper Gunner he flew on Lancasters with 9 and 61 Squadrons taking part in many raids including the final attack to sink the Tirpitz in November 1944 along with attacks on Berchtesgaden, Hitlers alpine home.
