Over the last 30 years, Ivan Berryman has become a leading aviation, motor racing and naval artist. In this time, the subjects of his paintings have been wide and varied as he has deliberately strived to include some of the lesser know aircraft, ships and events in his portfolio, which includes aircraft like the Defiant, TSR2, Beaufort, ships including MTBs and corvettes, and around 100 different aircraft of the first world war. In addition to this he has taken new approaches to the classic subjects of his field, including the Dambuster Lancasters, Battle of Britain Spitfires, Bf109s and Hurricanes, HMS Hood, Bismarck and the best known naval ships, as well as some iconic sporting moments. In his own words : Art and aviation have been like a brother and sister to me. We have grown up together, learned together and made our adult lives together. But you do not have to have an appreciation of aircraft to admire the graceful lines of a Spitfire or the functional simplicity of a Focke-Wulf 190. They are themselves a work of art and they cry out to be painted - not as machines of war and destruction, but as objects of beauty, born of necessity and function, yet given a life and iconic classicism beyond their original calling. My interest and love of art and aircraft was gifted to me by my father, a designer and aeronautical engineer of considerable repute. Denis Berryman C.Eng. FRAeS. He gave me his eyes, his passion, his dedication and his unwavering professionalism. I owe him everything. And I miss him terribly. A love of art and of beautiful and interesting things takes you on a journey. You discover new interests, new fascinations, and you want to paint them. You want to paint them in their environment, in their element. Whether it is an aeroplane, a warship, a racing car or a beautiful woman, their gift to an artist is the same: Their lines, their texture and the way that light and shadows give them form. These are the food and oxygen of an artist. Not the paint and the canvas. These are mere tools. The secret is in the passion and the perception... |

The Best Fighting Unit in the LFT by Ivan Berryman (PC) During 1917 under the leadership of Hauptmann Godwin von Brumowski Flik 41J was to become recognized as the finest of all the Fliegerkompanie in the Austro-Hungarian Army Air Service. With the superb Albatros D.III (Oef), the Luftfahrtruppen (LFT) were equipped to take on the enemy on equal terms. |
North Atlantic Companions by Ivan Berryman. Short Sunderland Mk.1 L5798 (DA-A) of 210 Sqn, based at Pembroke, dips her wings in salute to HMS Hood as she punches through the North Atlantic swell early in 1941. By May of that year, this mighty ship would be gone, lost with all but three of her crew, a victim of the might of the German Navy at the savage hands of the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. |
Tribute to Fighter Ace P/O Boleslaw Michal Gladych by Ivan Berryman No.303 Squadron took off from Northolt at 1937 hrs to take part in Circus No. 20 by escorting six Blenheim bombers in an attack on Mardyke aerodrome The Spitfires were intercepted by the Luftwaffe, and in the course of the dogfight P/O Gladych shot down a Bf109 and then while doing a steep turn to avoid an attacker he collided with the tail section of another Bf109. He suffered a serious injury to his head when struck by a fragment of the German plane and was only semi-conscious when he attempted to make an emergency landing at RAF Manston. He was unable to make it to the airfield and crash-landed near Ramsgate, hitting a telephone pole in the process. |
The Hunting Party by Ivan Berryman. Depicting Spitfires of No.92 Squadron, which on their first mission over Dunkirk, encountered six ME109Es and succeeded in shooting down every one of them! Such actions came to symbolise the spirit of the 92nd Squadron which went on to see intense fighting during the Battle of Britain and by the end of 1940 had claimed an astonishing 127 enemy aircraft destroyed. A dramatic and unusual perspective on this classic aeroplane addition to any collection of Spitfire paintings. |
USS America by Ivan Berryman. A Vought A-7 Corsair of VA-146 makes its final approach to the sprawling deck of the USS America, (CVA-66) as she skirts Vietnamese waters in company with a little Rock-class missile / command cruiser. The A-7 became the Navys prime weapon toward the end of the war, playing a vital role in the anti-radiation Linebacker Raids. |
Non Nobis Domine by Ivan Berryman A Knight Templar on horseback, his horse draped in the iconic heraldry of the order. Perhaps one of the most recognisable heraldic symbols of the time, the cross represented martyrdom and courage and was displayed proudly by all members of the Knights Templar. |

Etrich Taube by Ivan Berryman. The extraordinary Taube (or Dove) was extensively used by the Germans as a reliable, stable observation and reconnaissance aircraft as late as 1916, despite its archaic appearance. The Taube type first flew in Austria in 1909, the brainchild of Dr Igo Etrich and employed the early method of directional control known as differential wing-warping, instead of possessing ailerons and elevators. This version was powered by a Mercedes 6-cylinder inline engine and is a two-seat variant, much favoured by the Germans. |
The Good Old Temeraire by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The hero of Trafalgar, HMS Temeraire, is depicted here at sea as she was originally constructed, with her simple scroll figurehead, and the yellow hull that was typical of the period. She has her studding sails set on the mainmast to help make all speed as she punches through the heavy swell of the English Channel. For Trafalgar, Temeraire was repainted with the 'Nelson Chequer' pattern that can be seen on HMS Victory today, this magnificent ship coming to the latter's rescue whilst fighting on with a prize lashed to each of her sides. Post Trafalgar, her crew raised enough money from their prizes to have a new figurehead carved which she carried proudly even to the scrap yard at Rotherhithe in 1838, where she was broken up. |

Last Man Away by Ivan Berryman. The remarkable Fairey Swordfish served with distinction throughout WWII, despite being nothing short of an anachronism. Its dated appearance belied a solid, workmanlike airframe that provided a stable platform from which to launch torpedoes against enemy shipping, the venerable 'Stringbag' sending a greater tonnage of Axis shipping to the bottom than any other allied aircraft in the Second World War. A Mk.II is shown taking off from HMS Ark Royal early in 1941. |
Prelude to Thermopylae by Ivan Berryman. In 480 BC the Spartans tried to defend the pass at Thermopylae against the Persians led by Xerxes. The Persian fleet had sailed along the coastline from northern Greece into the Gulf of Malia on the eastern Aegean Sea towards the mountains at Thermopylae. The Greek General and King Leonidas led the Greeks and tried to defend the pass of Thermopylae. All the defending Spartans were killed during the Battle of Thermopylae. Their defence and courage provided inspiration to the Greeks, and the following year the Greeks won battles against their old enemy the Persians. |
Tribute to Peter Düttmann by Ivan Berryman. Peter Düttmann joined 5.JG52 in the spring of 1943, remaining with the unit until the end of the war. In just 395 missions he scored 152 victories - including 9 in a single day - and was awarded the Knight's Cross. Despite his aircraft being shot down or crash landing on 17 occasions, he was never wounded. He is depicted here in Bf.109 G-4 Black 12 of 5/JG52, Russia, May 1943. Peter Düttmann died in 2001. |
Deadly Combo by Ivan Berryman. Equipped with the Henschel Hs.293 guided bomb, the Dornier Do.217s of KG 40 and KG 100 represented a new and significant threat to Allied shipping. The first such victims were the sloop HMS Egret and the destroyer HCMS Athabaskan, both in the Bay of Biscay in August 1943. Although crude and needing to be guided to their target by an operator in the launch aircraft, the Hs.293s introduced a new breed of air-launched weapon to modern warfare, a concept that is still in use to this day. |
Tribute to Oblt Kurt Student by Ivan Berryman. Kurt Student was a pilot before the beginning of World War One and served throughout the conflict, scoring 6 aerial victories. He served with several squadrons including as commander of Jasta 9, and is shown here in his Fokker E.IV. He went on to be a high-ranking officer in the Luftwaffe during World War Two, and was instrumental in creating the German paratroop force. He was later convicted of war crimes associated with the invasion of Crete by his paratroops - he died in 1978. |

Victory over Africa by Ivan Berryman. The 73 Sqn Hurricane of Sqn Ldr Derek Ward is shown having received fatal strikes from the guns of Bf 109 F-4 flown by the 'Star of Africa' Hauptmann Hans-Joachim Marseilles of 3/JG27 on 17th June 1942. Ward was Marseilles' third victim in this single action when he returned to the combat zone to cover the safe descent by parachute of the German ace's first two victories, both of whom had been shot down within seconds of each other. |

Sleeping Giants/ Mighty Locomotives B16 (B16, V2s and A1s) by Ivan Berryman. In an era long past. Mighty locomotives, done for the day, sit evocatively amid taut beams of sunshine as their dying fires are raked over and their steam valves opened. All members of a once great and noble family, a B16, two V2s and two A1s share the brooding silence together as if in contemplation of more modern times. |
