Over the last 30 years, Ivan Berryman has become a leading aviation, motor racing and naval artist. In this time, the subjects of his paintings have been wide and varied as he has deliberately strived to include some of the lesser know aircraft, ships and events in his portfolio, which includes aircraft like the Defiant, TSR2, Beaufort, ships including MTBs and corvettes, and around 100 different aircraft of the first world war. In addition to this he has taken new approaches to the classic subjects of his field, including the Dambuster Lancasters, Battle of Britain Spitfires, Bf109s and Hurricanes, HMS Hood, Bismarck and the best known naval ships, as well as some iconic sporting moments. In his own words : Art and aviation have been like a brother and sister to me. We have grown up together, learned together and made our adult lives together. But you do not have to have an appreciation of aircraft to admire the graceful lines of a Spitfire or the functional simplicity of a Focke-Wulf 190. They are themselves a work of art and they cry out to be painted - not as machines of war and destruction, but as objects of beauty, born of necessity and function, yet given a life and iconic classicism beyond their original calling. My interest and love of art and aircraft was gifted to me by my father, a designer and aeronautical engineer of considerable repute. Denis Berryman C.Eng. FRAeS. He gave me his eyes, his passion, his dedication and his unwavering professionalism. I owe him everything. And I miss him terribly. A love of art and of beautiful and interesting things takes you on a journey. You discover new interests, new fascinations, and you want to paint them. You want to paint them in their environment, in their element. Whether it is an aeroplane, a warship, a racing car or a beautiful woman, their gift to an artist is the same: Their lines, their texture and the way that light and shadows give them form. These are the food and oxygen of an artist. Not the paint and the canvas. These are mere tools. The secret is in the passion and the perception... |

One Minute to Juno by Ivan Berryman. Landing craft head for Juno Beach in northern France on 6th June 1944 in support of the British landings at Sword Beach, packed with Royal Marine Commandos and the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Aside from their flanking action for the offensive on Caen, their mission was to capture the airfield at Carpiquet, but they would first have to drive through the defenses of two battalions of the German 716th Infantry and elements of the 21st Panzer Division. |
Outbound from Mildenhall by Ivan Berryman. Short Stirling III EH990 is depicted heading out over the North Sea on the evening of 7th October 1943, on a mine-laying sortie off the Frisian Islands. LS-K was piloted, on this occasion, by Fl/Sg Thomas Robertson Ewen, RAFVR on his first - and sadly only - mission as pilot, his aircraft falling victim to a marauding enemy night fighter. |
Victory at Monte Santo by Ivan Berryman (PC) An Italian Caudron C.IV was a victory shared by Hauptmann Godwin von Brumowski and his great friend Frank Linke-Crawford above the Isonzo River, close to the ruined monastery of Monte Santo, both Austro-Hungarian pilots flying the recalcitrant Hansa-Brandenburg D.1 (KD). |
Iron Workhorse by Ivan Berryman. Watched by the Estate Foreman, nattily decked out in Plus Fours, a Clayton and Shuttleworth steam traction engine is prepared in the morning sun for a days work hauling logs and providing the drive for much of the estates machinery, both in the timber forests and on the surrounding farmland. |

The Bombardment of Tripoli, 1804 by Ivan Berryman. Ships of Commodore Preble's Mediterranean Squadron are shown during the action of 3rd August 1804 when they provided support to the gunboats and mortar boats as they pounded the defensive walls and xebecs that were defending Tripoli. In the left foreground, the bomb boat Robinson rolls as she fires her mortar whilst the brig Argus takes up station behind Constitution, both of which are firing broadsides. The brig Syren is in the far distance, engaging more of the Tripolitan xebec gunboats, having cut inside of Constitution to engage the enemy more closely. |
Edward Rickenbacker by Ivan Berryman. Captain Edward Rickenbacker of the 94th Sqn, United States Air Force, is shown in his Spad S.XIII, pursuing a Fokker D.VII. Eddie scored his first victory on 29th April 1918, but by the November Armistice he had increased his tally to 26 confirmed kills. |

Wearing the distinctive black and white identification stripes of the D-Day operations of June 1944, Airspeed Horsa MkII assault gliders, towed by their Short Stirling MkIV tugs of No.620 Squadron, make their way across a moody English Channel en route to Normandy during the tumultuous Operation Overlord. |
First Dawn in Britain by Ivan Berryman The Roman conquest of Britain was the Roman Empire s conquest of most of the island, which was inhabited by the Celtic Britons. It began in earnest in AD 43 under Emperor Claudius, and was largely completed in the southern half of Britain (most of England and Wales) by AD 87. |
First to Fall by Ivan Berryman. The first Messerschmitt Bf.109 to be brought down on English soil in WW2 was 2964, a machine from 3/LG2. Although injured, the pilot baled out successfully, landing near Sandwich in Kent, the victim of an intense combat with Spitfires of 54 Sqn. |
Fairey Spearfish by Ivan Berryman. Planned as a successor to the Barracuda, the Fairey Spearfish was one of the largest and heaviest single-engined aircraft ever flown. This example, RA363, first took to the air on 23rd September 1947 but a change in naval requirements brought the project to a premature halt before being superceded by the highly successful Gannet. |
Oberleutnant Ernst Udet by Ivan Berryman. Wearing one of the most distinctive colour schemes of World War One, Germanys second highest scoring ace after Manfred Von Richthofen was the charismatic Ernst Udet with 62 victories to his credit. His brightly coloured Fokker D.VII carried the initials of his girlfriend (LO) on the side of his aircraft and the inscription Du Noch Nicht! (Not You Yet!) on the upper tail surfaces. Udet was badly wounded in September 1918 and did not fly in combat again, but survived the war, only to commit suicide in 1941. |
Senna Tribute by Ivan Berryman. Three of the famous cars of Ayrton Senna; the John Player Special Lotus in which he made his name; the number 1 McLaren in which he dominated so many races, and his number 2 Williams, the car in which he never completed a race. After two non-finishes at the start of the 1994 season, he was involved in a fatal accident in the third race of the season at Imola, San Marino. |
Tribute to Oliver 'Boots' LeBoutillier by Ivan Berryman. 'Boots' LeBoutillier was an American flying Ace credited with 10 victories in World War One. Having crossed into Canada and subsequently flying for the British, he is seen here in his Sopwith Triplane N5459 of 9 Naval Squadron in France in 1917 in which he scored 3 victories. In April 1918 he was involved in the dogfight in which Manfred von Richthofen - the infamous Red Baron - was shot down and killed. He was awarded the British Distinguished Flying Cross and after the war performed barnstorming and skywriting and gave flying lessons to Amelia Earhart. He appeared in many Hollywood movies as a stuntman, and for his rescue of a crashed pilot in Colorado he received the Silver Medal of Valor, the highest decoration of the Civil Air Patrol. LeBoutillier died in 1983 aged 88 after a life in aviation. |

White 8 - Walter Nowotny by Ivan Berryman. Austrian-born Walter Nowotny was one of Germany's highest scoring aces of WWII with 258 victories to his credit, three of them flying the Messerschmitt Me.262. He is depicted here flying White 8 of Kommando Nowotny based at Achmer, Germany in 1944. He was killed in action later that year following a fraught combat with US fighters during the Defence of the Reich. |

Tribute to the Boston Crews by Ivan Berryman. Boston IIIs of No 88 (Hong Kong) Squadron. These aircraft were involved in the search for the Scharnhorst in February 1942 and frequently attacked targets in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. |
