Over the last 30 years, Ivan Berryman has become a leading aviation, motor racing and naval artist. In this time, the subjects of his paintings have been wide and varied as he has deliberately strived to include some of the lesser know aircraft, ships and events in his portfolio, which includes aircraft like the Defiant, TSR2, Beaufort, ships including MTBs and corvettes, and around 100 different aircraft of the first world war. In addition to this he has taken new approaches to the classic subjects of his field, including the Dambuster Lancasters, Battle of Britain Spitfires, Bf109s and Hurricanes, HMS Hood, Bismarck and the best known naval ships, as well as some iconic sporting moments. In his own words : Art and aviation have been like a brother and sister to me. We have grown up together, learned together and made our adult lives together. But you do not have to have an appreciation of aircraft to admire the graceful lines of a Spitfire or the functional simplicity of a Focke-Wulf 190. They are themselves a work of art and they cry out to be painted - not as machines of war and destruction, but as objects of beauty, born of necessity and function, yet given a life and iconic classicism beyond their original calling. My interest and love of art and aircraft was gifted to me by my father, a designer and aeronautical engineer of considerable repute. Denis Berryman C.Eng. FRAeS. He gave me his eyes, his passion, his dedication and his unwavering professionalism. I owe him everything. And I miss him terribly. A love of art and of beautiful and interesting things takes you on a journey. You discover new interests, new fascinations, and you want to paint them. You want to paint them in their environment, in their element. Whether it is an aeroplane, a warship, a racing car or a beautiful woman, their gift to an artist is the same: Their lines, their texture and the way that light and shadows give them form. These are the food and oxygen of an artist. Not the paint and the canvas. These are mere tools. The secret is in the passion and the perception... |

Tribute to Lt Cdr Eric 'Winkle' Brown by Ivan Berryman. One of the most experienced and respected test pilots in history, Eric 'Winkle' Brown carried out the first landing and take off by a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier on 3rd December 1945. This was accomplished in the second prototype De Havilland Vampire LZ551/G which had been extensively modified for the sole purpose of carrier operations. Not only was an arrester hook added, but the aircraft featured larger flaps and was fitted with the more powerful Goblin 2 engine. The first take off by a jet from an aircraft carrier is depicted here as Lt Cdr Brown lifts away from the deck of HMS Ocean on that momentous day. |

Tribute to Alfred Grislawski by Ivan Berryman. Credited with more than 130 victories in World War Two, Alfred Grislawksi scored 24 of these on the Western Front. He is depicted here flying his Me109 with JG53 in what would be his last combat on 26th September 1944. Having shot down a P-38 Lightning earlier in the day, he was shot down in the combat shown by the P-51 Mustang of American Ace Hub Zemke and bailed out. Opening his parachute very low for fear of being shot at, he landed hard and damaged vertebrae, and did not recover before the end of the war. Awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, he died in 2003 aged 83. |
Flt Lt Walter Lawson by Ivan Berryman. Depicting the No.19 Sqn Spitfire Mk.IIA of Flt Lt Walter Lawson attacking a Bf.109 E-4 of JG.3 in the Summer of 1940. The final tally of Lawson before he was listed as missing in August 1941 was 6 confirmed, 1 shared, 3 probables and 1 damaged. The Bf.109 shown here was flown by Oberleutnant Franz von Werra. He survived this encounter, but was shot down over Kent in September 1940. |
Tribute to Hughie Edwards by Ivan Berryman. On 4th July, 1941, Wing Commander Hughie Idwal Edwards, flying Blenheim Mk. IV, V6028 (GB-D) led a vital attack on the port of Bremen, Germany. With no cloud cover to conceal their approach, the Blenheims of 105 and 107 Sqn flew 50 miles overland at a perilously low altitude, eventually reaching their target amid formidable anti-aircraft fire. All of the aircraft received some damage and four of the blenheims were lost, but the mission was a major success, the remaining eleven aircraft returning safely to RAF Swanton Morely. Edwards was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry and leadership. |
Dunkirk by Ivan Berryman. Between 24th may and 4th June 1940 an extraordinary armada of craft, large and small, naval and civilian, embarked on one of the greatest rescue missions in history. the evacuation of 330,000 British and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in northern France. the destroyer HMS Shikari dominates the foreground here as troops pour onto the beaches and harbour moles in search of salvation. MTB are seen picking up troops and taking them to ships further out including MTB102. Also shown is a paddle steamer with very shallow draft taking on troops close to the beach and in the distance HMS Grafton can be seen taking troops from the mole. She was lost later during the evacuation. |
Immelmanns Last Flight by Ivan Berryman. No one will ever know exactly what caused Max Immelmanns demise, but what is known is that his propeller was seen to disintegrate, which caused a series violent oscillations that ripped the Fokker E.III apart, the tail breaking away before the wings folded back, trapping the young German ace in his cockpit. The popular belief is that his interrupter gear malfunctioned, causing him to shoot away part of his own propeller, but British reports attribute Immelmanns loss to the gunnery of Cpl J H Waller from the nose of FE.2b 6346 flown by 2Lt G R McCubbin on Sunday, 18th June 1916. Immelmann was flying the spare E.III 246/16 as his own E.IV had been badly shot up earlier that day. |
Yellow 10 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The elegant D-13 was the ultimate example of Focke-Wulf's FW.190 to be powered by the Jumo 213EB inverted inline engine and is still widely regarded as one of the finest aircraft to have entered service with the Luftwaffe in WWII. Armed with three 20mm guns, one of them firing through the propeller spinner, this aircraft proved itself to be an effective weapon for Geschwader Kommodore Major Franz Gotz of JG.26, the great ace claiming 63 victories. His machine is depicted in close-up here - "Yellow 10", Werk No. 836017, based at Furstenau in February 1945. |

The New Order by Ivan Berryman. For reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel, it was business as usual for the first Formula 1 race of 2011 in Melbourne, the German securing a dominant pole position in qualifying and following it up with a decisive win the following day in the Red Bull RB7. Lewis Hamilton's McLaren was in the hunt throughout the race, the Briton taking an eventual second place after duelling closely with his rival in the early stages. |
HMS Bristol departing Portsmouth by Ivan Berryman. The only Type 82 destroyer to be built for the Royal Navy, HMS Bristol (D23) was designed for a role that never materialised, the rest of her class being cancelled when the intended CVA-01 class of aircraft carriers that she was intended to escort and defend were themselves cancelled in the late 1960s. Bristol enjoyed a long and varied career however, her size making her a suitable flagship for Operation Ocean Safari 81 before going in for a refit and joining the Royal Navy Task Force in the South Atlantic during the Falklands Campaign. Paid off in 1991, she is now moored permanently at Whale Island, Portsmouth, as a training ship. HMS Bristol is depicted here slipping quietly out of Portsmouth Harbour in the 1970s. |
Ronnie Peterson - The Final Victory by Ivan Berryman. The Austrian Grand Prix at the Österreichring in 1978 was conducted under heavy skies that threatened rain at some point during the race. Having qualified on pole, the Swede Ronnie Peterson made a textbook start in his Lotus Cosworth 79, but his team mate, Mario Andretti, did not get away so well and it was Carlos Reutemann's Ferrari that assumed second place on the run up the steep hill from the start. The cold conditions meant that grip was poor and several cars found themselves in the barrier before the race was finally stopped, due to a torrential downpour. At the restart, Peterson again assumed a dominant lead, claiming his last victory ahead of Patrick Depailler's Tyrrell Cosworth and Gilles Villeneuve's Ferrari. Just one month later at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the great Ronnie Peterson was involved in an horrific crash at the race start that left him with terrible injuries from which he later died. |

Dawn Chorus - Tribute to the men of the 553rd Bomb Squadron, 386th Bomb Group by Ivan Berryman. Martin B.26 Marauders of the 553rd Bomb Squadron, 386th Bomb Group are depicted approaching the Normandy coast early on 6th June 1944. These aircraft were among the first to bomb the enemy gun emplacements and reinforcements situated along the beaches in order to help clear the way for the Allied landings that were just hours away at the start of Operation Overlord. These B.26s carried out low level bombing sorties over Utah Beach, their low altitude being the key to their high level of success and accuracy. Nearest aircraft is 131576 AN-Z 'Dinah Might' now on display at the Utah Beach Museum. |
The Horror and the Glory by Ivan Berryman. The flight to the Ruhr dams on the night of 16th/17th May 1943 as part of Operation Chastise was fraught with peril as each wave of three aircraft hugged the ground across Holland and into Germany to avoid detection. Having flown particularly low to avoid the flak and searchlights near Dulmen, ED864 (AJ-B) piloted by Flt Lt W Astell sadly hit high tension wires and immediately burst into flames, the aircraft rearing into the air before hitting the ground, it's Upkeep mine exploding moments later, killing all the crew instantly. These were the first victims of the Dambuster raids, the first of eight aircraft that failed to return of the nineteen that took off on this heroic mission. |

HMS Cossack on convoy duty by Ivan Berryman. Built by Vickers Armstrong and launched on 8th June 1937, at the outbreak of War the Cossack served in Home waters and also in the Mediterranean. She was torpedoed and sunk by U.563 in the North Atlantic on the 23rd of October 1941. |
