Over the last 30 years, Ivan Berryman has become a leading aviation, motor racing and naval artist. In this time, the subjects of his paintings have been wide and varied as he has deliberately strived to include some of the lesser know aircraft, ships and events in his portfolio, which includes aircraft like the Defiant, TSR2, Beaufort, ships including MTBs and corvettes, and around 100 different aircraft of the first world war. In addition to this he has taken new approaches to the classic subjects of his field, including the Dambuster Lancasters, Battle of Britain Spitfires, Bf109s and Hurricanes, HMS Hood, Bismarck and the best known naval ships, as well as some iconic sporting moments. In his own words : Art and aviation have been like a brother and sister to me. We have grown up together, learned together and made our adult lives together. But you do not have to have an appreciation of aircraft to admire the graceful lines of a Spitfire or the functional simplicity of a Focke-Wulf 190. They are themselves a work of art and they cry out to be painted - not as machines of war and destruction, but as objects of beauty, born of necessity and function, yet given a life and iconic classicism beyond their original calling. My interest and love of art and aircraft was gifted to me by my father, a designer and aeronautical engineer of considerable repute. Denis Berryman C.Eng. FRAeS. A love of art and of beautiful and interesting things takes you on a journey. You discover new interests, new fascinations, and you want to paint them. You want to paint them in their environment, in their element. Whether it is an aeroplane, a warship, a racing car or a beautiful woman, their gift to an artist is the same: Their lines, their texture and the way that light and shadows give them form. These are the food and oxygen of an artist. Not the paint and the canvas. These are mere tools. The secret is in the passion and the perception... |

Tribute to Capitano Carlo Maurizio Ruspoli by Ivan Berryman. Born in 1906, Carlo Maurizio Ruspoli di Poggio Suasa is recorded as being probably the oldest Italian fighter pilot to become an ace, serving both in the North Africa campaign and on the Russian front, as depicted here, claiming a Polikarpov I.16. He ended the war with a victory total of 10 confirmed aircraft destroyed and died in 1947. |
HMS Formidable by Ivan Berryman. With HMS Warspite keeping a watchful eye off her port bow, the Illustrious class carrier HMS Formidable prepares to recover a Fairey Albacore TB MK1 of No. 826 sqn. following a vital sortie against Italian shipping at the start of the Battle of Cape Matapan in march 1941. Led by Lt Cdr W G H Saunt DSC, Formidables Albacores launched torpedo attacks on the battleship Vittorio Veneto, seriously damaging her, despite coming under intense anti aircraft fire and a splash barrage of 15-inch shells. |
Battle Over Bembridge by Ivan Berryman. (PC) At the very height of the Battle of Britain in August 1940, there was a great deal of furious fighting above and around the Isle of Wight. Monday 12th was an especially busy day for RAF Fighter Command, not least the Hurricanes of 601 Sqn, one of whom claimed this Messerschmitt Bf.110 in the skies above Bembridge, the two crew Staffel Kapitan Hptmn. Kulbel and his observer Offz. Budig losing their lives as their aircraft plunged into the sea. |
Lone Gladiator by Ivan Berryman. A Gloster Gladiator MkII of 247 Sqn is depicted patrolling off the Cornish coast in August 1940 during which time this squadron became the only one to operate the Gladiator in the defence of the South of England during the Battle of Britain. |
Scourge of the Mediterranean - Tribute to Capitano Carlo Emanuele Buscaglia by Ivan Berryman. The Savoia Marchetti SM.79s of the 281a Squadriglia were to become notorious for their daring attacks on allied shipping in the Mediterranean from their bases in Libya throughout 1940. Among the most celebrated of Italian pilots was Capitani Carlo Emanuele Buscaglia, seen here claiming another victim in his personal aircraft 281-5. |
Tribute to Hubert 'Hub' Zemke by Ivan Berryman. Hub Zemke lends his name to 'Zemke's Wolf Pack', the 56th Fighter Group that became deadly with the P-47 Thunderbolt thanks to his tactics with the machine. He scored a total of 17.75 victories in the war, mostly with this unit, but is depicted here on 26th September 1944 flying a P-51 Mustang with the 479th Fighter Group. He scored just 2.5 victories with this unit, but the one depicted here is over the German Ace Alfred Grislawski in his Me109 - a victory that injured Grislawski and meant he took no further combat role in the war. At the end of October, Hub Zemke's airframe failed in turbulence and he bailed out to be taken prisoner for the rest of the war. Amongst his many decorations are the Distinguished Service Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross as well as the Purple Heart. He died aged 80 in 1994. |

The Taking of the Lady Grace by Ivan Berryman. Although entirely fictitious, this scene depicts a typical action by pirates in the early 1700s, most likely in the Caribbean where the many supply routes from Europe converged and offered rich pickings. Although fraught with danger, the rewards for the buccaneers were rich and plenty, many of them rising to great notoriety for their daring exploits. |

Pan Am Boeing 707 at Tempelhof by Ivan Berryman. Pan American World Airways were the first to usher in the 'Big Jet' era with their trans-Atlantic service from New York to Paris in October 1958. From that day on, the ubiquitous Boeing 707 would set the standard for global air services, a legacy that continues to this day. Here a Pan Am 707 is depicted at Berlin's Tempelhof airport. |
'O' Safe Home by Ivan Berryman. Bill Townsend's Lancaster O for Orange, returns safely on the morning of 17th May 1943 after the success of the daring raids on the dams of the Ruhr Valley. |
First to Fall by Ivan Berryman The first Luftwaffe aircraft shot down during operations against the United Kingdom was on 26 September 1939. A Dornier Do18D flying boat (M7+YK, Werk Nr.0731) of 2/Kistenfliegergruppe 506 was shot down by a Blackburn Skua of No.803 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, operating from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, north of the Great Fisher Bank at approximate co ordinates 57.36N, 02.38E. The Blackburn Skua was crewed by Lieutenant B. S. McEwen and his air gunner Acting Petty Officer B. M. Seymour. Lt. zur See Ernst K6rner and the crew of the Dornier were rescued by the destroyer HMS Somali (taken as PoWs) and the aircraft, which was still afloat, is sunk by gunfire. |

Fairey Battle, 218 Squadron by Ivan Berryman. A Fairey Battle of No.218 Squadron gets on the tail of a Ju-87 Stuka over France in 1940. An aircraft carrying the codes HA-J was shot down by flak on the afternoon of 12th May 1940. The three crew of aircraft K9353, J B Horner, L C Flisher and L D Davies were all lost. |
Shell House Raiders by Ivan Berryman. Tucked in tight en route to Copenhagen, a wave of Mosquito FB VIs of 21 Sqn and their Mustang Mk.III escorts of 126 Sqn (including top Ace Agorastos John Plagis - 16 victories, on his last mission of the war) approach the Jutland Peninsula after a bumpy crossing of the North Sea on the morning of 21st March 1945. The Mosquitoes went on to carry out one of the most daring and successful raids of the Second World War on the German Gestapo headquarters in the centre of Copenhagen, inflicting irreparable damage to the Shellhus and killing more than 150 Gestapo personnel. |
Fork Tailed Devil (Lightning) by Ivan Berryman. It was during the inter-war period that a reawakening interest in twin engined fighter design prompted several countries to investigate a number of revolutionary concepts, of these only Lockheed's sleek and unconventional P.38 was to be put into large scale production, proving to be a versatile and dominant fighter possessed of extremely long range, good speed and manoeuverability and a formidable armament. When production ceased in 1945, 9,923 examples of the P38 Lightning had been delivered. |
HMS Hood Engages Bismarck by Ivan Berryman. The moment shortly after dawn on 24th May 1941 when HMS Hood, in company with HMS Prince of Wales, opens fire on the Bismarck, setting in motion one of the greatest sea dramas the world had seen. |

The Jericho Boys by Ivan Berryman. On 18th February 1944, nineteen De Havilland Mosquito Mk.VIs and one photo-reconnaissance aircraft took off on a mission to attempt to free 120 French patriots being held captive by the Nazis in the prison at Amiens. Codenamed Operation Jericho, the attack on the jail was to be carried out in up to three waves - the first to break the prison walls in two places, the second to bomb the main building and a third standing by, should either of the first two fail. The mission was a complete success despite some losses on the ground and two aircraft destroyed. Here, the iconic moment is captured as a pair of Mosquitoes of 487 Sqn are seen breaching the wall at 12.03 hours. |
