Over the last 30 years, Ivan Berryman has become a leading aviation, motor racing and naval artist. In this time, the subjects of his paintings have been wide and varied as he has deliberately strived to include some of the lesser know aircraft, ships and events in his portfolio, which includes aircraft like the Defiant, TSR2, Beaufort, ships including MTBs and corvettes, and around 100 different aircraft of the first world war. In addition to this he has taken new approaches to the classic subjects of his field, including the Dambuster Lancasters, Battle of Britain Spitfires, Bf109s and Hurricanes, HMS Hood, Bismarck and the best known naval ships, as well as some iconic sporting moments. In his own words : Art and aviation have been like a brother and sister to me. We have grown up together, learned together and made our adult lives together. But you do not have to have an appreciation of aircraft to admire the graceful lines of a Spitfire or the functional simplicity of a Focke-Wulf 190. They are themselves a work of art and they cry out to be painted - not as machines of war and destruction, but as objects of beauty, born of necessity and function, yet given a life and iconic classicism beyond their original calling. My interest and love of art and aircraft was gifted to me by my father, a designer and aeronautical engineer of considerable repute. Denis Berryman C.Eng. FRAeS. A love of art and of beautiful and interesting things takes you on a journey. You discover new interests, new fascinations, and you want to paint them. You want to paint them in their environment, in their element. Whether it is an aeroplane, a warship, a racing car or a beautiful woman, their gift to an artist is the same: Their lines, their texture and the way that light and shadows give them form. These are the food and oxygen of an artist. Not the paint and the canvas. These are mere tools. The secret is in the passion and the perception... |

Concorde over London by Ivan Berryman. A sight never to be repeated. Concorde G-BOAE gracefully drifts above London with Buckingham Palace immediately below, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, the River Thames and the London Eye in the middle distance. On 24th October 2003, the world said goodbye to this elegant airliner, bringing to a close almost thirty years of commercial supersonic travel. |
Desert Hawk by Ivan Berryman. Originally conceived as a replacement for the US Army's ageing Bell UH-1s, the UH-60 Black Hawk first entered service in 1979 and has since served in almost every campaign that US and coalition forces have been involved with. This UH60 is landing to pick up troops in Iraq in 2004. |
The Wreck of the Empress Queen by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On 3rd February 1916, P.S. Empress Queen, which had been requisitioned by the Royal Navy for war duties, was returning to Southampton from Cherbourg with 1,300 men on board when she struck the ledge at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight and was carried high onto the rocks by the rising tide. The Bembridge lifeboat Queen Victoria (ON468) was immediately in sttendance and, as the weather worstened managed to rescue the remaining 110 men on board over the course of four trips, most of the troops having been evacuated onto destroyers. The Queen Victoria was damaged on the rocks on her third trip, but managed one more rescue to remove the crew. For his heroism, Coxwain John Holbrook was awarded the RNLI Silver Medal. The Empress Queen was never re-floated and she eventually disintegrated on the rocks. |
Sous-Lieutenant Charles Nungesser by Ivan Berryman. Surely one of the most irrepressible aces of World War 1, Frenchman Charles Nungessers victory total of 43 confirmed kills and a further 11 probables was achieved despite surviving a number of crashes and accidents from which he always bounced back in defiance of his quite severe injuries. His fame and prowess brought him a personal challenge from his German adversaries to take part in a one-on-one combat. Accepting the challenge, the lone Nungesser encountered not one, but six, enemy aircraft and promptly sent two of them down in flames. In this picture, his Emblems of Mortality personal motif is clearly seen on the side of his Nieuport 23 as he sees off an Albatross toward the end of the war. Nungesser survived the Great War, only to be lost over the Atlantic when attempting a flight to New York in 1927. |

HMS Dreadnought S101 by Ivan Berryman. Launched on Trafalgar Day, 1960, HMS Dreadnought was the Royal Navy's first nuclear powered submarine, entering service in 1963. She is depicted here in the Firth of Forth with the iconic Forth Bridge in the background in December 1963 when she was docked at Rosyth for re-coating of her hull and a general examination. |
Bravo Shuttleworth by Ivan Berryman Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth roars under Starkeys Bridge during the International Donington Grand Prix Car Race in his ex-Brian Lewis Alfa Romeo Monoposto on 5th October 1935. It was a rce this young daredevil aristocrat was to win handsomely in the face of some very stiff opposition, taking home the Donington Park Challenge Trophy and 400 pounds for his efforts. |

Julius Caesar by Ivan Berryman. Julius Caesar was a Roman general renowned for his military prowess. He achieved notable victories in the Gallic Wars (58-50 BC), expanding Roman territory to include present-day France and Belgium. Caesars conquest of Gaul culminated in the decisive Battle of Alesia. His subsequent Civil War against Pompey (49-45 BC) saw him triumph in battles like Pharsalus and Munda, ultimately leading to his dictatorship over Rome. His military successes laid the groundwork for the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. |

Gottfried von Banfield by Ivan Berryman. Linienschiffsleutnant Gottfried Freiherr von Banfield was one of the top scoring aces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with 9 confirmed and 11 unconfirmed victories to his credit and was awarded the Empires highest order, the Knights Cross of the Order of Maria Theresa for his achievements. In February 1916 he was put in command of the naval air station at Trieste, a post that he held until the end of the war. He is shown here with his observer, Seekadett Heribert Strobl Edler von Ravensberg, having just claimed his first victory, an Italian observation balloon near the mouth of the Isonzo River on 27th June 1915, flying his Lohner Type T, L.47. |
Tribute to Hugo Broch by Ivan Berryman. Regarded as one of the finest wingmen to have flown, Hugo Broch first flew alongside Horst Adameit (who scored 166 victories) then Bazi Sterr (130 victories) before emerging as one of the superb combat pilots of JG54. HMS Sceptre by Ivan Berryman. Commissioned in 1943, HMS Sceptre was built by Scotts Shipbuilding in Greenock, Scotland. In a short career, Sceptre under the command of Lieutenant Ian McIntosh was involved with the X-Craft midget submarine attacks on German capital ships and floating docks in Norway. In addition, she sunk four enemy merchant ships and an enemy naval vessel between March and September 1944. HMS Sceptre was then refitted as a target submarine late in 1944, and was scrapped in 1949. |

Trafalgar - The Destruction of the Bucentaure by Ivan Berryman. With her mizzen top already gone and her sails aloft having received severe punishment, Victory breaks through the line behind the French flagship Bucentaure, delivering a shattering broadside into her stern. So severe was this opening fire that the Bucentaure was effectively put out of the rest of the battle, although Admiral Villeneuve himself was to miraculously survive the carnage. Beyong Victory can be seen the French Redoubtable, which is receiving fire from Victorys starboard guns, and the Spanish San Leandro is in the extreme distance. Most of Victorys stunsails have been cut away, but it was her stunsail booms that became entangled with the rigging of the Redoubtable when she put her helm to port and ran onto her. Admiral Nelson fell shortly afterward, having received a fatal wound from a musket ball fired by a French sharpshooter in Redoubtables mizzen fighting top. The Temeraire can be seen approaching the fray to the right. |

The Dambusters by Ivan Berryman. Lancasters of 617 Sqn Dambusters get airborne from their Scampton base at the start of their journey to the Ruhr Valley on the night of 16th May 1943 under the codename Operation Chastise. These are aircraft of the First Wave, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the Second Wave having already departed some ten minutes earlier to negotiate a more northerly route to their targets. On this momentous night, both the Möhne and Eder dams were successfully breached, whilst the Sorpe was also hit, but without serious damage. Of the nineteen aircraft that took part in the mission, eleven returned safely. |
Tribute to Louis Strange by Ivan Berryman. Having made his name as a fine fighter pilot, innovator and prankster, Royal Navy pilot Captain Louis Strange took the air in his 6 Sqn BE2c on Christmas Day 1914, flew menacingly low over the German occupied airfield at Lille and bombed it with footballs. |
