Over the last 30 years, Ivan Berryman has become a leading aviation, motor racing and naval artist. In this time, the subjects of his paintings have been wide and varied as he has deliberately strived to include some of the lesser know aircraft, ships and events in his portfolio, which includes aircraft like the Defiant, TSR2, Beaufort, ships including MTBs and corvettes, and around 100 different aircraft of the first world war. In addition to this he has taken new approaches to the classic subjects of his field, including the Dambuster Lancasters, Battle of Britain Spitfires, Bf109s and Hurricanes, HMS Hood, Bismarck and the best known naval ships, as well as some iconic sporting moments. In his own words : Art and aviation have been like a brother and sister to me. We have grown up together, learned together and made our adult lives together. But you do not have to have an appreciation of aircraft to admire the graceful lines of a Spitfire or the functional simplicity of a Focke-Wulf 190. They are themselves a work of art and they cry out to be painted - not as machines of war and destruction, but as objects of beauty, born of necessity and function, yet given a life and iconic classicism beyond their original calling. My interest and love of art and aircraft was gifted to me by my father, a designer and aeronautical engineer of considerable repute. Denis Berryman C.Eng. FRAeS. A love of art and of beautiful and interesting things takes you on a journey. You discover new interests, new fascinations, and you want to paint them. You want to paint them in their environment, in their element. Whether it is an aeroplane, a warship, a racing car or a beautiful woman, their gift to an artist is the same: Their lines, their texture and the way that light and shadows give them form. These are the food and oxygen of an artist. Not the paint and the canvas. These are mere tools. The secret is in the passion and the perception... |

A Friend in Need by Ivan Berryman. 146 Wing Hawker Typhoons were busy throughout the winter of 1944 / 45, carrying out a wide variety of missions and operations using a combination of rockets and bombs. Here, Wing Commander J R Baldwin OC of 146 Wing escorts a damaged wingman home as they enter the holding pattern to begin finals into their base at Antwerp. Baldwin's aircraft is Mk 1B PD521, carrying his personal markings JBII on the nose. |

Tribute to the Crew of HMS Truant by Ivan Berryman. Commissioned in October 1939, HMS Truant served in the North Sea for almost a year, notably damaging the German cruiser Karlsruhe in one action. Sent to the Mediterranean, Truant sunk several Axis merchant ships here, including the Italian tanker Bonzo depicted in this painting. Tracked off the east coast of Italy in the dark of 15th - 16th December 1940, Bonzo fell prey to one of three torpedoes, and was finished off from close range, sinking rapidly. HMS Truant continued successful patrols in the Med until May 1941, completing an Atlantic crossing for refit in the United States before returning in October that year. Sent to the Far East in 1942, the submarine returned to the UK around the Cape of Good Hope for another refit. Returning to service in UK waters in mid-1943, Truant was again sent to the Far East, making it as far as Malta before turning back with mechanical issues, spending the rest of the war as a trials ship in the United Kingdom. |
AGO C.1 by Ivan Berryman. At the outbreak of World War 1, AGO Flugzeugwerke GmbH had not endeared itself to the architects of the German war machine due to the flimsiness of some of its designs, coupled with poor workmanship. When the C.1 first appeared in 1915, it attracted little interest and yet went on to prove itself to be a robust and useful aircraft, its pusher design dispensing with the now traditional open framework to support the tail in favour of twin streamlined tailbooms. The observer / gunner in the nose enjoyed an unrivalled field of view, although the engines position immediately behind the pilot was always a concern in the event of a crash. This aircraft, LF181, transferred from the Fliegertrouppe to the navy in 1915 and was based at Nieuwmunster, shown here in an exchange with an FE.2b in the skies over Belgium. |
HMS Torbay - Opration Flipper by Ivan Berryman. In foul weather off the coast of North Africa on the night of 14th November 1941, HMS Torbay deploys men of 11 (Scottish) Commando for an audacious attempt to assassinate German General Erwin Rommel. Named Operation Flipper, the attempt saw 26 men from HMS Torbay join just 8 more from HMS Talisman - the rest trapped aboard by the weather - land 250 miles behind enemy lines in Libya, and march to the headquarters for the attack late on 18th November. While the Commandos made it to the target building, their leader, Lt Col Geoffrey Keyes was killed and they discovered Rommel was not there. Retreating to the landing beach to be picked up by HMS Talisman, they were intercepted by Italian forces and captured facing impossible odds, although a few managed to scatter into the desert and escape. Keyes was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, HMS Torbay survived the war and was scrapped soon afterwards. |
Tribute to Maggiore Francesco Baracca by Ivan Berryman. Francesco Baracca was Italy's highest-scoring ace in World War 1, his victory tally being an impressive 34 at the time of his death. His Spad S.VII carried his personal emblem, the Prancing Horse, a tribute to his days in the cavalry. Upon his death in this aircraft on 19th June 1918, Baracca's mother donated the emblem to Enzo Ferrari whose cars still carry this badge the world over. He is depicted here despatching the Oefag-built Albatros of Rudolf Szepessy-Sokell of Flik 41J on 6th November 1917. |
Lieutenant Croye Rothes Pithey and Lieutenant Hervey Rhodes, RE.8 by Ivan Berryman. The Royal Aircraft Factory RE.8 (Reconnaissance Experimental 8), or Harry Tate as its crews affectionately called it, was used throughout the Great War to good effect, but was something of an anachronism when pitted against the more modern machines of the Jastas. However, Lieutenants Rothes Pithey and Rhodes scored a credible 10 victories together, sending down three Pfalz D.IIIs on a single mission on 7th June 1918 flying F6097. |
Guardians of the Beaches by Ivan Berryman. Seen here in company with other 485 Sqn machines, Spitfire Mk.IXc ML407 is depicted over the Normandy beaches shortly after D-Day. Flown by New Zealander Fl Lt Johnnie Houlton, this aircraft claimed a Ju.88 on 6th June and shared in the destruction of another on the same day. Coded 'V' in honour of his wife, Vickie, ML407 is still flying today, now converted to a two-seater and regularly displayed by Carolyn Grace. |

Ltn Fritz Kempf by Ivan Berryman. The Fokker DR.1 Triplane (213/17) of Fritz Kempf swoops on a pair of unsuspecting Sopwith Camels whilst on patrol over the Western Front in 1917. Kempfs practise of having his name painted across the top wing of his aircraft was supplemented by the taunt Do You Remember Me? on the mid wing. His aircraft is depicted in the colours worn by Jasta Boelcke of the Imperial Air Service. |

R.34 - Welcome to America by Ivan Berryman. Mineola, Long Island, USA, 6th July 1919. Major J E M Pritchard parachutes from the forward car of the R.34 to supervise ground handling of the giant airship upon its arrival in the United States. In so doing, Pritchard became the first man to land on American soil after an east-west crossing of the Atlantic by air. The enormous airship, with the nickname 'Tiny', was damaged beyond repair by foul weather in January 1921 and scrapped. |
The Attack on Kleykamp Villa by Ivan Berryman. Just before 15.00 on 11th April 1944, six de Havilland Mosquito FB.VIs of 613 Sqn led by Wing Comander Robert Bateson successfully destroyed the Gestapo records office housed inside Kleykamp Villa in The Hague. Flying at rooftop height and using the tower of the famous Peace Palace as a sighting reference, the first wave of Mosquitoes dropped their high explosive bombs to 'open up' the building, whilst the second wave hit it again with incendiaries to burn all the records. Incredibly, no one outside the building was hurt and no other buildings were damaged, save for some broken windows caused by the blast. All six aircraft returned home safely. |
Captain Roy Brown engages the Red Baron, 21st April 1918 by Ivan Berryman. Mystery still surrounds just why Manfred von Richthofen risked so much in chasing the novice pilot Wilfred Wop May into Allied-occupied territory on the morning of Sunday, 21st April 1918, but it was to be his last flight, this error of judgement costing him his life. Von Richthofen had broken from the main fight involving Sopwith Camels of 209 Sqn to chase Mays aircraft, but found himself under attack from the Camel of Captain Roy Brown. All three aircraft turned and weaved low along the Somme River, the all red Triplane coming under intense fire from the ground as well as from Browns aircraft. No one knows exactly who fired the crucial bullet, but Manfred von Richthofens aircraft was seen to dive suddenly and impact with the ground. The Red Baron was dead and his amazing run of 80 victories was over. The painting shows Mays aircraft (D3326) in the extreme distance, pursued by DR.1 (425/17) and Browns Camel (B7270) in the foreground. |

A Brace of Hunters by Ivan Berryman. Known among the Taliban forces as the Mosquito, the Apache AH-1 has proved itself a formidable and essential part of the British presence in Afghanistan, operated by 656 and 664 Squadrons of 9 Regiment AAC. Two AH-1s are depicted here landing after a close support mission in 2010. |
Tribute to William Pitt-Brown by Ivan Berryman. William Pitt-Brown was a ground-attack Typhoon pilot during the Normandy campaign. Prior to this he served on the North-West Frontier flying Wapati and Valencia aircraft with No.31 Sqn, before flying Curtiss Mohawks with No.5 Sqn on the Arakan and Imphal fronts in the Burma campaign. During the Normandy campaign, he commanded No.174 Sqn the led 121 Wing, completing more than 100 missions.
