Over the last 30 years, Ivan Berryman has become a leading aviation, motor racing and naval artist. In this time, the subjects of his paintings have been wide and varied as he has deliberately strived to include some of the lesser know aircraft, ships and events in his portfolio, which includes aircraft like the Defiant, TSR2, Beaufort, ships including MTBs and corvettes, and around 100 different aircraft of the first world war. In addition to this he has taken new approaches to the classic subjects of his field, including the Dambuster Lancasters, Battle of Britain Spitfires, Bf109s and Hurricanes, HMS Hood, Bismarck and the best known naval ships, as well as some iconic sporting moments. In his own words : Art and aviation have been like a brother and sister to me. We have grown up together, learned together and made our adult lives together. But you do not have to have an appreciation of aircraft to admire the graceful lines of a Spitfire or the functional simplicity of a Focke-Wulf 190. They are themselves a work of art and they cry out to be painted - not as machines of war and destruction, but as objects of beauty, born of necessity and function, yet given a life and iconic classicism beyond their original calling. My interest and love of art and aircraft was gifted to me by my father, a designer and aeronautical engineer of considerable repute. Denis Berryman C.Eng. FRAeS. A love of art and of beautiful and interesting things takes you on a journey. You discover new interests, new fascinations, and you want to paint them. You want to paint them in their environment, in their element. Whether it is an aeroplane, a warship, a racing car or a beautiful woman, their gift to an artist is the same: Their lines, their texture and the way that light and shadows give them form. These are the food and oxygen of an artist. Not the paint and the canvas. These are mere tools. The secret is in the passion and the perception... |

Tribute to Sgt Ray Shaw, RAAF by Ivan Berryman. Whilst flying Curtiss Kittyhawk AK726 (O) on 22nd February 1942, Sgt Ray Shaw, assisted by Sgts Beste, Shillabeer and Kierath in similar aircraft, became the first pilot to score a victory for 450 Sqn RAAF, sending down a Ju.88A4 south east of Gazala, Libya. The German aircraft, coded 7A+NH from 1.(F)121, suffered terminal damage to an engine and crash landed in the desert, where the crew were taken prisoner. |
The Battle of Copenhagen, 2nd April 1801 by Ivan Berryman. The key to Nelsons victories always lay in his meticulous planning and the Battle of Copenghagen was no exception as he used his fleet to first destroy the Danish floating defences so that his bomb vessels could be brought up to bombard the city itself. The Danes eventually capitulated, but they had fought hard and over 2,000 men had died on both sides before the end of the battle. In this view, HMS Elephant, carrying the flag of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, dominates the scene as the battle gathers intensity. The Knight's Wrath by Ivan Berryman. A Templar Knight of the medieval order best known today as the Knights Templar. Existing from the early 12th century for nearly two hundred years when they were disbanded by the Pope after members in France were arrested, tortured and murdered under the orders of King Philip IV, the order are closely linked to The Crusades and faded as an organistaion after the Holy Land was lost. King Philip IV was in deep financial debt to the order who had grown rapidly in wealth and made innovations in early banking and he used the end of the Crusades to successfully push for the disbandment of the order. |
HMS Trenchant by Ivan Berryman. Launched on 3rd November 1986 and commissioned into the Royal Navy on 14th January 1989, HMS Trenchant (S91) was the fifth of the Trafalgar class nuclear powered submarines and was the first Royal Navy vessel to fire the Block IV Tomahawk cruise missile. In addition to her complement of missiles, she is also equipped with Spearfish torpedoes and some of the most sophisticated data acquisition and underwater detection systems which allow her to monitor surface vessels undetected. |

Alain Prost and Jean Alesi, British Grand Prix, Silverstone, 1993. by Ivan Berryman. Alain Prost in his number 2 Williams dices with Jean Alesi in his number 27 Ferrari at the British Grand Prix in 1993. Prost went on to win this race after Damon Hill suffered engine failure, while Alesi finished in 9th place, a lap behind Prost. |

Raid on the Rock - Tribute to the Crews of the Regia Aeronautica by Ivan Berryman. The only four engined heavy bomber to serve with the Regia Aeronautica, the Piaggio P.108 was built in too few numbers to have any significant effect in the Italian air campaign in World War Two, but was a worthy aircraft with several innovative design features, not least the remotely controlled gun barbettes in the outer engine nacelles. Most notable of the P.108's achievements were a number of daring night time raids on Gibraltar, as depicted here, flying from 274a Squadriglia's base at Decimomannu on Sardinia. |
Fieseler F.156 Storch by Ivan Berryman. Depicted on a typical night time sortie, this Fieseler Fi.156C was in service in Sarajevo in 1945 with FFS A/B5. The Storch's incredible short take off and landing capability, coupled with its stalky, but robust landing gear, made it an ideal aircraft for covert drops, personnel transport and spotting duties. GA+TR is depicted landing with flaps and leading edge slats extended. I |
Admiral Graf Spee enters Montevideo by Ivan Berryman. Showing visible signs of her tangle with British cruisers at the Battle of the River Plate, the German pocket battleship Graf Spee slips into the neutral waters of the Montevideo roadstead accompanied by the Uruguayan gunboat Rio Negro for light repairs. (Damage can be seen on the hull and behind the Conning tower ) . This was to be the last haven for the Graf Spee which was later scuttled at the harbour mouth, her commander Kapitan zur See Langsdorff believing a large British fleet to be waiting for attempted escape into the South Atlantic. |

Tribute to Oberleutnant Heinrich Ehrler by Ivan Berryman. Viciously maligned for failing to prevent the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz at Kaafjord on 12th November 1944, Heinrich Ehrler was one of the Luftwaffe's greatest leaders, highly decorated and respected by all who flew with him. The Bf.109s of 6./JG5, based at Petsamo in Finland, took on a variety of difficult roles in the Scandinavian theatre, operating in the most testing of conditions, often round the clock in the summer months. Here, Ehrler's own machine, Yellow 12 leads other aircraft of 6./JG5 on a patrol above the mighty Norwegian fjords. |

Bismarck - Pride of the Kriegsmarine by Ivan Berryman. Together with her sister, Tirpitz, the Bismarck was Germany's most modern and formidable warship of WWII. Equipped with the very latest in rangefinder technology and festooned with defensive firepower, perhaps her most daunting weapons were the eight 15 inch guns, arranged in four turrets, that were to prove so effective against almost every other ship that she encountered, the most famous of these arguably being the Royal Navy's HMS Hood, sunk with huge loss of life in the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941. Ace of Burma - Tribute to Wing Commander Frank Carey by Ivan Berryman. Having been posted to help relieve the pressure on the Allied forces in Burma, Frank Carey's 135 Sqn found themselves immediately in action against the Japanese. On 29th January 1942, Carey's first victim was the Nakajima Ki.27 'Nate' of Sgt-Maj Nagashima of the 77th Sentai, his aircraft falling close to the RAF airfield at Mingaladon Township, Rangoon. The following month, Carey scored again, claiming three more confirmed Ki.27s, a reconnaissance aircraft, a transport aircraft and another Ki.27. |
Out of the Blue by Ivan Berryman. (PC) When first posted to Kommando Nowotny based at Achmer, Germany, in October 1944, Leutnant Franz Schall was already credited with a stunning 117 victories, but his score continued to rise as he mastered the beautiful Messerschmitt Me262 jet fighter, adding a further 16 Allied aircraft to his tally including P.51 Mustangs, P.47 Thunderbolts and B.24 Liberators. Having survived a near fatal encounter when both engines of his aircraft seized in combat, he was killed in a landing accident in 1945 whilst posted to JG.7.
