Over the last 30 years, Ivan Berryman has become a leading aviation, motor racing and naval artist. In this time, the subjects of his paintings have been wide and varied as he has deliberately strived to include some of the lesser know aircraft, ships and events in his portfolio, which includes aircraft like the Defiant, TSR2, Beaufort, ships including MTBs and corvettes, and around 100 different aircraft of the first world war. In addition to this he has taken new approaches to the classic subjects of his field, including the Dambuster Lancasters, Battle of Britain Spitfires, Bf109s and Hurricanes, HMS Hood, Bismarck and the best known naval ships, as well as some iconic sporting moments. In his own words : Art and aviation have been like a brother and sister to me. We have grown up together, learned together and made our adult lives together. But you do not have to have an appreciation of aircraft to admire the graceful lines of a Spitfire or the functional simplicity of a Focke-Wulf 190. They are themselves a work of art and they cry out to be painted - not as machines of war and destruction, but as objects of beauty, born of necessity and function, yet given a life and iconic classicism beyond their original calling. My interest and love of art and aircraft was gifted to me by my father, a designer and aeronautical engineer of considerable repute. Denis Berryman C.Eng. FRAeS. He gave me his eyes, his passion, his dedication and his unwavering professionalism. I owe him everything. And I miss him terribly. A love of art and of beautiful and interesting things takes you on a journey. You discover new interests, new fascinations, and you want to paint them. You want to paint them in their environment, in their element. Whether it is an aeroplane, a warship, a racing car or a beautiful woman, their gift to an artist is the same: Their lines, their texture and the way that light and shadows give them form. These are the food and oxygen of an artist. Not the paint and the canvas. These are mere tools. The secret is in the passion and the perception... |

HMS Hood and HMS Express Departing from Portsmouth 1935 by Ivan Berryman The pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Hood, leaves Portsmouth on her way to the Fleet Review of King George V in July 1935. HMS Hood is followed by the destroyer HMS Express. |
Tribute to Eduard Böhme by Ivan Berryman. Eduard Böhme is depicted here in his Fokker E.I in September 1915. Flying with Kampfeindecker Halbabteilung, or 'half-flight of monoplane fighters', a unit attached to Feld Flieger Abteilung 9b, he shot down two Farman aircraft on the 25th September in this aircraft. He reportedly landed near his second victim, destroying his landing gear in the process. He was killed in a similar aircraft just a few months later in January 1916. |
Adversaries by Ivan Berryman. No one knows for certain whether the two great fighter aces Douglas Bader and Adolf Galland actually fought each other in a one-on-one combat, but it is thought highly likely that they did as the famous Tangmere Wing led by Bader regularly found itself dueling with the Bf.109s of JG.26 led by Galland. Their great rivalry came to an end in August 1941 when Bader was shot down over St Omer, but these two heroes were to become close friends after the war, each having the utmost respect for the other. |
Winter Express by Ivan Berryman. (P) The Jubilee Class locomotive 'Leander' LMS 5690 in Crimson Lake livery pulling an express through a crisp, snowy landscape. This locomotive served from 1936 until 1948 as No.5690 then was renumbered No.45690 and served until 1964. She was later restored to running condition and carried this crimson livery once again until a refit in 2012 saw her painted black. Original painting on stiff acrylic paper. |
British Airways Boeing 747-400 by Ivan Berryman. British Airways has the largest fleet of Boeing 747-400's with 50 in service. A total of 694 747-400's have been built with the first rolled out in January 1988 with its certification being received on January 10th 1989. |
Moonlight Run (Dambusters) by Ivan Berryman. In one of the finest portrayals of the Avro Lancaster, Moonlight Run depicts the aircraft of Fl. Lt. Mickey Martin (ED909 AJ-P) at the moment of release of the Wallace Bomb during the Dams raid on the Ruhr in 1943. With only the gentlest of moonlight rippling over the dark water of the Mohne, this dramatic picture plays homage to the impossible low altitudes and high speeds that were necessary to complete successfully their heroic mission. A stark and refreshing treatment of a subject at the hearts of all aviation historians. |
High Pursuit by Ivan Berryman. Squadron Leader H C Sawyer is depicted here flying his 65 Sqn Spitfire Mk.1a R6799 (YT-D) in the skies above Kent on 31st July 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain. Chasing him is Major Hans Trubenbach of 1 Gruppe, Lehrgeschwader 2 in his Messerschmitt Vf109E-3 (Red 12) . The encounter lasted eight minutes with both pilots surviving. |

Major William Barker VC, DSO - Nearly an Ace in a Day by Ivan Berryman. Flying Sopwith Snipe E8102 on 27th October 1918, Major William Barker encountered a flight of fifteen Fokker D.VIIs and decided to take them on single handed. Having downed one enemy aircraft, Barker was wounded in his left thigh and momentarily fainted. Coming to, he found another D.VII ahead of him and immediately resumed the battle. Another bullet now tore into his right leg and another shattered his left elbow. Despite his terrible injuries, Barker shot down three D.VIIs and drove the others off before crash landing his bullet-riddled Snipe in friendly territory. He survived the crash and was awarded the VC for his gallantry on this epic flight. |

Teamwork by Ivan Berryman. The afternoon of 3rd August 1944 saw Lancasters of 15 Sqn assigned to an attack on German V-1 Rocket stores at Bois de Cassan. While over the target the squadron encountered heavy flak. During the return journey, Lancaster LS-P fell behind the rest of the squadron but luckily for the crew, two P-38 Lightnings who had been involved in fighter sweeps, spotted the straggling Lancaster and escorted it back to base at Mildenhall. |
Canberra at San Carlos by Ivan Berryman. Looking slightly the worse for wear after her journey south to the Falkland Islands in 1982, the P&O cruise liner Canberra, requisitioned as a troop carrier at the outbreak of the conflict, is shown in the midst of an attack by Argentine Mirage aircraft in San Carlos Water during May. Believed by the Argentine pilots to be a hospital ship, Canberra herself was never targeted, but her proximity to other ships of the British task force meant that she was constantly in danger. |
HMS Warspite by Ivan Berryman. Popularly known as The Old Lady, Warspite was launched on 26th November 1913 and was still fulfilling a crucial role at the end of World War II. Even after being paid off, she escaped being broken up by going aground at Mounts Bay whilst on tow to the breakers yard. During the two world wars, Warspite accumulated fourteen Battle Honours including Jutland May 1916. She is shown in company with HMS Royal Sovereign in the Mediterranean in May 1940 when she was Fleet Flag. |
Dambusters - The First Wave by Ivan Berryman. En route to the dams of the Ruhr Valley, the first wave of three specially adapted Avro Lancasters roar across the Dutch wetlands on the night of 16 -17th May 1943 led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, their mission to breach the Mohne and Eder dams, thus robbing the German war machine of valuable hydro-electric power and disrupting the water supply to the entire area. Carrying their unique, Barnes Wallis designed 'Bouncing Bomb' and flying at just 30m above the ground to avoid radar detection, 617 Squadron's Lancasters forged their way into the enemy territories, following the canals of the Netherlands and flying through forest fire traps below treetop height to their targets. Gibson's aircraft ('G'-George) is nearest with 'M'-Mother of Fl/Lt Hopgood off his port wing and 'P'-Peter (Popsie) of Fl/Lt Martin in the distance. |
Leutnant Werner Voss by Ivan Berryman. Aircraft of Jasta 10 prepare to taxi out for a dawn patrol, led by the fearless Leutnant Werner Voss in his Fokker F1 103/17 in September 1917. Arguments still rage concerning the colour of the engine cowling on his Triplane. Certainly, when the aircraft was delivered, its upper surfaces were painted factory finish streaked green and, it is recorded that it was flown as delivered with Voss personal mechanic noting that no extra painting was undertaken, aside from Voss Japanese kite face which occupied the nose. However, research shows that by the time of Voss death on 23rd September 1917, after his epic battle with SE5s of 56 Sqn, the cowling was probably yellow in keeping with all Jasta 10 aircraft. Renowned by pilots from both sides for his bravery and extraordinary abilities with his diminutive Triplane, the young ace scored a total of 48 confirmed victories before being brought down by Lieutenant Rhys Davids on the very day that he was due to go on leave. The Fokker F1 differed from the production DR.1 in detail only, Voss machine being fitted with a captured 110hp Le Rhone engine, his aircraft not being fitted with the outer wing skids common to the DR.1. |
Richard Bong by Ivan Berryman. The highest scoring US pilot of the Second World War, Richard Bong, is depicted in his personal P.38J Marge, claiming just one of his 40 confirmed victories. Insisting that he was not the greatest of marksmen, it was Bongs habit to manoeuvre to impossibly close distances before opening fire on his opponents. His eventual total may well have been greater than 40, as a further 8 probables could be attributed to him, together with 7 damaged. He was killed whilst testing a P.80 jet for the USAF in August 1945. |
Tribute to Manfred von Richthofen by Ivan Berryman. The legendary Red Baron would score 80 confirmed victories in World War One, making him the conflict's top Ace. It was in a Fokker Dr.I - as depicted here - that he scored his final two victories, claiming two Sopwith Camels on 20th April 1918. It was in the same aircraft on the following day that he was shot down and killed. There are few pilots who gain such cultural significance as the Red Baron, still widely known more than a century after the events that gave him fame. |
The Morning Watch, Hastings, 1066 by Ivan Berryman. A Saxon guard, keeping watch on the morning of the battle of Hastings. The fighting would begin at 9am and conclude at dusk with a Norman victory against the overwhelmed Saxons, the death of King Harold being the final nail in the coffin that led to retreat. |
USS Constitution - 'Old Ironsides' by Ivan Berryman. Launched in 1797, the USS Constitution was the third of her class to be constructed at Edmund Hartt's shipyard in Boston, Massachusetts, this fine ship spending most of her early years in local waters, protecting merchantmen from French marauders. She is best remembered, however, for her decisive conquests against British ships during the war of 1812, among them the Guerriere against whom the Constitution gained her nickname 'Old Ironsides'. She continued to serve until 1881 and is still afloat today, the oldest seagoing warship in the world. |
